Traditionally a hymn tune is somewhat independent of any particular text. Texts and tunes of the same meter may be interchanged. For this reason, each tune in the hymnbook has its own name, separate from the title of the text.

He was a major Calvinist opponent of John Wesley. He is best remembered as the author of the hymn "Rock of Ages". Three of his other hymns – "A Debtor to Mercy Alone", "Deathless Principle, Arise" and "Object of My First Desire" – are still occasionally sung today. This was simply in keeping with the British custom of naming hymn tunes for in the early 19th century, who named the tune “Toplady” for the author of the text.
